Southwest DeKalb led the way among seven local teams that posted perfect records in abbreviated action from last week before play was suspended until further notice due to the corona virus concerns.
Coach Tyrus Taylor’s Southwest DeKalb unit rolled past Clarkston (18-1) March 9, Clarkston (20-3) March 11 and Towers (28-0) March 13 by the cumulative margin of 66-4 in moving to 3-7 overall and 2-0 in Region 5-AAAAA.
Coach Brian Ely’s Chamblee Bulldogs likewise got off to a 2-0 start in 5-AAAAA, besting Miller Grove (6-0) March 9 and Miller Grove (20-3) March 11 to improve to 7-7 overall.
Chamblee sophomore Taylor Flowers turned in a super pitching effort in a 6-0 blanking of Miller Grove March 9, striking out 13 while allowing only one hit over seven innings.
Redan registered a pair of Region 5-AAA triumphs over Towers (18-1) March 9 and Towers (19-4) March 9, moving coach Alexander Wyche’s squad to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in 5-AAA.
Stephenson and Tucker sat at the top of the Region 4-AAAAAA standings with perfect 2-0 league starts last week. Coach Timothy Jones and the Stephenson Jaguars took care of Charles Drew (12-1) March 9 and Mt. Zion (13-6) March 11 to improve to 5-1 overall.
Coach Matt Masce’s Tucker Tigers continued to roar back from a tough 0-7 start, registering victories over Forest Park (10-7) March 9 and Charles Drew (9-2) March 11 to move to 4-7 overall.
Tucker used a stellar relief effort from junior Joshua Waller in slipping past Forest Park by a 10-7 count March 9. Waller pitched the last four innings, striking out four and allowing only four hits and one run to pick up the victory. Sophomores Andre Hunter (2-4; 2 RS) and Noah Grayson (2-3; 3 RS; 2 RBI; 2 2B; 2 SB) paced the offensive effort for the Tigers in the game.
Tucker next pounded out 11 hits and received a strong effort on the mound in a 9-2 romp over Charles Drew March 11. Grayson took pitching honors, striking out 17 and allowing only three hits, two walks and two runs in going the full seven innings. Sophomores Barry Manning (2-5; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 2 2B; 1 SB) and Kaece Supples (2-4; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 1 2B), Waller (2-3; 2 RBI; 2 SB) and senior Lennox Moody (2-3; 2 RS; 1 RBI) collected two hits each on the offensive end.
Coach Eric Hoxie’s Arabia Mountain Rams opened region play in 5-AAAAA with a 15-0 blanking of Columbia March 9, moving to 1-4 overall.
Junior Mitchell Hall tossed a no-hitter to spark Arabia Mountain to a 15-0 blanking of Columbia March 9. Senior Eric Matthews shined on the offensive end for the Rams in the contest, going 4-5 with four RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and one triple.
Coach Marcus Salter and the McNair Mustangs rounded out the list of perfect showings last week, snaring a 17-5 triumph over Clarkston March 12 to move to 4-2 overall.
Clarkston rallied from a 6-0 deficit to pull out a thrilling 12-10 victory over Cross Keys in eight innings. Freshman Angelo Nunn (4-5; 3 RS) and sophomore Ethan Meredith (3-4; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 1 2B; 2 SB) led the offensive charge for the Angoras. Junior Chad Bigby claimed the pitching decision in relief, striking out nine while allowing five walks, four hits and two earned runs over the final seven innings.
Cross Keys received big offensive outings from senior Gavino Arzate (3-4; 3 RBI; 1 RS) and junior Amadeous Domingo (3-5; 2 RS1 RBI) in the Clarkston loss.
Senior Augie McQuaig struck out five and allowed no earned runs to help Druid Hills roll past Lithonia (14-1) March 9.
