The 2020 DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships are set for Saturday at Miller Grove High School after big semifinal games on Wednesday night.
The girls’ championship set for 1:00 pm features the Region 1 co-champions Chamblee (15-1) and Tucker (15-1). The pair split two games during the regular season, but Chamblee won the coin flip for the No. 1 seed.
Chamblee knocked off Region 3 champion Lithonia (13-3) 38-23 at home on Wednesday to advance to the championship round. Tucker pinned Chapel Hill with its only loss of the season 42-36 at Chapel Hill on Wednesday to reach the title game.
Tucker won the first meeting against Chamblee 56-23 on December 14 while Chamblee evened things up in the second meeting on January 8 with a 44-29 victory.
The girls’ consolation game will feature Chapel Hill and Lithonia at 10:00 am at Miller Grove. Chapel Hill won 44-27 over Lithonia in their regular season tilt.
Champion (15-1) and Salem (14-2) face off in the boys’ championship at 2:30 pm at Miller Grove after picking up semifinal victories at home on Wednesday.
Salem, the Region 3 champ, defeated Stone Mountain (11-5) 51-35 to get into the title match. Champion beat Columbia (13-2) for the second time this season 49-42 and the two losses are Columbia’s only ones on the season.
Champion defeated Salem 56-49 on January 18 to give the Lions their first loss of the season. The other Salem loss came 37-35 in the regular season finale against Redan. Champion’s only loss on the season came to Region 1 co-champion Chamblee in a 50-40 loss in January.
Columbia and Stone Mountain play in the boys’ consolation game at 11:30 am. Columbia defeated Stone Mountain 57-45 in their only meeting this season back on November 20.
