One defending champion kept its hopes for a repeat alive as the DeKalb County School District Middle School Basketball Championships move into the quarterfinals on Saturday at various sites.
The defending champions Champion Lady Chargers moved on to the quarterfinals with a 53-32 win over McNair (6-8) on Wednesday. Saniyah Rice scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Chargers (8-6) into the next round. Champion travels to Chamblee (13-1), a 37-8 winner over Miller Grove (4-10), on Saturday for a 10 am contest.
Undefeated Chapel Hill (14-0) moved forward with a 29-14 win over Cedar Grove (2-12). Chapel Hill entertains Freedom (9-5), a 29-14 winner over Henderson (6-8), on Saturday at 10 am.
Region 3 winner Lithonia (12-2) knocked off Peachtree (5-9) 29-18 to move into the quarters. Alika Daugherty had 17 points for Lithonia. Lithonia plays host to Druid Hills (8-6), a 40-39 winner over Columbia (7-7), on Saturday at 10 am.
Region 2 champ Stephenson (10-4) rolled to a 39-11 victory over Salem (5-9) to move forward. Stephenson will host Region 1 co-champ Tucker (13-1), a 34-24 winner over Redan (6-8), on Saturday at 10 am.
BOYS
The Region 4 champions Columbia Eagles (12-1) knocked the defending tournament champions Stephenson Jaguars (3-11) out of the championships with a 53-42 win to highlight the boys’ first round action.
Jacob Mikell led the way with 11 points and Marvin Brooks knocked down 10 in the win.
Columbia plays host to Miller Grove (10-4), a 37-34 winner over Henderson (5-9), on Saturday at 10 am. Miller Grove got 14 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks from Marion Hopkins in the win. Trevian Callaway (8 points, 7 steals), Jakharre Barnes (7 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals) and Ali Dargan (4 points, 6 assists) contributed to the team’s win.
Region 1 co-champ Chamblee (10-4) slipped past Lithonia (6-8) 33-32 in a rematch of the 2017 championship game. Cozze’ Meyer hit the game-winner for the Bulldogs. Joshua Griffith, Braden Jones and Miles Scharf all came off the bench to spark the Bulldogs’ win.
Chamblee hosts Stone Mountain (10-4), a 43-38 winner over Cedar Grove (4-9), on Saturday at 11:15 am. Stone Mountain got a monster game from Jakhi Howard who put up 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in the victory. Malik Hinton added 11 points, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Champion (13-1) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 61-29 win over Tucker (2-12). The Chargers host Peachtree (10-4), a 33-32 winner over Redan (8-6), at 10 am on Saturday.
Salem (12-2) moved into the quarterfinals with a 60-32 win over Chapel Hill (4-10). Salem entertains Druid Hills (10-4), a 47-31 winner over Bethune (9-5), at 10 am on Saturday.
