The 2020 DCSD middle school basketball season got underway last Saturday as teams begin their journey towards the Championship Tournament in February.
Three games involved matchups between Region 3 and Region 4 in non-region games with Region 4 taking two of the three games in boys’ play.
Sanchez Brown hit for 20 points and Jamarcus Hatcher 17 to lead the Columbia Eagles out of Region 3 to a 50-23 win over the Lithonia Bulldogs to open the season.
Miller Grove picked up the win for Region 3 with a 47-27 victory over Bethune. Trevian Callaway hit for 10 points and had seven assists and five steals to lead the Wolverines. Marian Hopkins had 11 rebounds, five steals and three blocks while contributing six points in the win while Jonathan McBride hit for nine points. Jakharre Barnes added 13 rebounds and three blocks in the game.
Chapel Hill gave Region 4 the edge in the opening games with a 44-32 win over Redan.
Freedom (Region 3) picked up a 34-16 win over Sequoyah in a cross-over game with Region 1.
Region 2 member Druid Hills rolled to a 68-16 win over McNair led by an impressive double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds by Josiah Lawson in the Dragons season opener against the Colts.
Region 2 swept a pair of games with Region 1 with Stone Mountain and Stephenson picking up victories on Saturday. Stone Mountain pulled out a 57-51 win over Henderson led by Jahki Howard’s performance of 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in the game.
Stephenson completed the Region 2 sweep with a 39-28 win over Tucker. Stephenson’s Christian Thompson led with 14 points and shot 75 percent from the free-throw line.
GIRLS RESULTS
In the Region 3 vs. Region 4 girls’ games Region 3 reversed the boys’ results with two of the wins.
Miller Grove took a 34-18 win over Bethune to start the sweep by Miller Grove. Lindsey Myles topped the 20 mark with 23 points and Brooklyn Scrubb added six.
Lithonia got eight points from Alika Daugherty to earn a split with Columbia via a 24-18 win. Emani Scot hit for six points and Lyric McIver added five for Columbia.
Chapel Hill completed the sweep of Redan with a 44-23 win by the Lady Panthers.
In the Region 2 vs. Region 3 matchup between Druid Hills and McNair, Druid Hills started the sweep with a 33-27 win in the girls’ game.
Freedom started a sweep of Sequoyah by winning the girls’ contest 50-3.
Region 1 swept both girls’ matchups with Region 2 led by Tucker’s big 44-10 win over Stephenson. Malaya Jones hit for 26 points and had six assists in the win.
Henderson avoided a sweep at the hands of Stone Mountain with a 37-10 win in girls’ opener.
