Dunwoody, Druid Hills, Chamblee and Tucker picked up first round state playoff victories last Saturday to earn berths in their respective Sweet 16s.
Dunwoody traveled to Evans to take on South Paulding in first round play. The Lady Wildcats (25-19) advanced to the second round in the Class 6A state playoffs with a 3-0 win.
After a tight first game win of 25-19 then dominated the final two games 25-8 and 25-12. Dunwoody returns to Lakeside-Evans (39-5) to face the home team on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5:00 pm for the opportunity to advance to the Elite 8.
In other Class 6A playoff action, the Tucker Lady Tigers opened the first round with a 3-2 win over Effingham County at Sequoyah on Saturday. Tucker rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the match with wins of 25-14 and 15-13 in games four and five to advance. Tucker had won the opening game by a thrilling 32-30 before dropping the next two 21-25 and 22-25.
Tucker (30-15) went on to play their second round foe Sequoyah in the Sweet 16 following their first round win. Sequoyah played unkind hosts defeated Tucker 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-11) to end the Lady Tigers season.
A 3-0 win by the Druid Hills Lady Red Devils (18-12) over Perry (12-11) at St. Pius earned them a return trip to St. Pius (42-4) to face the home team on Wednesday, October 23 at 5:30 pm. Druid Hills won the opening game 26-24 before taking wins of 25-16 and 25-22 to close out the victory.
Lakeside lost a tough five-game match in Class 7A to host Lambert on Saturday to end the Lady Vikings (24-19) season. The Lady Vikings lost the first game 25-20, but bounced back to take a 2-1 lead with identical 25-20 wins. Lambert tied the match with a 25-22 victory in game four before closing out the match with a 15-11 win in game five.
Chamblee was the only Class 5A team from DeKalb to get a first round victory knocking off Paulding County (22-17) 3-0 to advance to the Sweet 16 at home. Starr’s Mill ended Chamblee’s season (43-6) in a Sweet 16 match played later in the day with a 3-0 win.
Other Class 5A participants that dropped out of the state playoffs including Clarkston (22-24) with a 3-1 loss to East Paulding, Arabia Mountain (27-10) 3-0 to Kell and Southwest DeKalb (21-12) 3-0 to Carrollton.
McNair’s long road trip to Thomasville did not end well for the Lady Mustangs (14-18) as Dade County (17-14) upended them 3-0 before defeating Thomasville 3-0 to advance to the Elite 8.
