Quarterback Jacobi Haynes accounted for five touchdowns including a one-yard sneak with 36 seconds left to close out a 41-25 win for the Martin Luther King Jr. Lions against Region 4-6A foe Mundy’s Mill on Friday night at Godfrey Stadium.
The win moved the Lions to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2012 and 2-0 in the region.
Mundy’s Mill (2-3, 0-3) had pulled within 34-25 as Ryan Nobles connected with Antoine Green on a 10-yard TD pass into the left corner of the end zone, but a two-point pass was broken up by the Lions to keep the lead at nine points with 4:48 to play.
The Lions got the football on the 35 following the kickoff and Haynes promptly led his team down the field running out most of the clock. Haynes carried four times for 41 yards in the drive including the final one-yard for the score. Jeremy Cain tacked on the PAT for the final of 41-25.
Haynes finished the night hitting on six off 11 passes for 194 yards and four touchdowns including the game’s opening score on a 37-yard toss to Dequan’dre Moore with 4:48 left in the first quarter. He would connect for touchdown passes of 42 yards with Moore, 34 to Caleb Bailey and 64 to Marquel Parks as they kept Mundy’s Mill in the rearview mirror.
Jeremy Cain connected on 5 of 6 PATs and also gave the Lions a 13-7 lead with his 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after Mundy’s Mill tied the game on a reverse to Corey Barnes for 31 yards in the second quarter.
Haynes added 145 yards rushing on 22 carries and the touchdown. Moore had three catches for 89 yards and the two touchdowns.
Ryan Nobles finished 13 of 21 passing for 197 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers.
Cedar Grove 41, Lovett 17
In a battle of ranked Region 5-3A teams, the No. 2 ranked Cedar Grove Saints went on a 34-7 run to knock of No. 8 ranked Lovett 41-17 on the road on Friday night.
Lovett led 10-7 early in the second quarter when the Saints (3-2, 1-0) got on track with a 10-yard touchdown run by Chavon Wright (19 carries, 234 yards, 3 TDs) and an Austin Smith (171 yards, 3 TD passes) 49-yard touchdown pass to Janiran Bonner (3 receptions, 67 yards, 2 TDs) to take a 21-10 lead into the half.

Lovett closed the gap to 21-17 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Blaine McAllister to Collin Goldberg, but the defending Class 3A champions Saints answered with Wright racing 41 yards to the score with 4 minutes left in the third quarter to make it 28-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Following a fumble recovery by the Saints linebacker Isaiah Ratcliff (13 tackles, 2 sacks) at the Lovett 16-yard line, Wright finished off a short scoring drive with a two-yard TD run to push the lead out to 35-17 with 7 minutes to play.
Antonio Taylor picked off his fourth pass in four games less than a minute later and the Saints cased in the turnover. Smith threw down the left sideline to Bernard Mack for a 59-yard scoring toss to finish off the scoring at 41-17.
Cedar Grove led 7-0 early on a 15-yard pass from Smith to Bonner.
Stockbridge 38, Columbia 37
The Columbia Eagles (0-5) stood toe-to-toe with the No. 7 ranked Stockbridge Tigers (5-0) before falling 38-37 on the road in a non-region game on Friday night.
The Eagles took a 31-23 lead with 1:34 left in the third quarter as quarterback Octavious Griffin connected with William Hemsley for a 38-yard scoring pass, but the PAT was no good.
Stockbridge rallied in the fourth quarter to take a 38-31 lead, but the Eagles answered with an interception return to close the gap to 38-31 with 2:33 to play. The point after try was no good as the Tigers held on to a slim lead.
Stockbridge ran out the clock to hold on for the win.
