The Champion Chargers got their season off to a roaring start with a 32-0 blanking of 2018 defending Trail to the Title middle school football champions Bethune Lions on Saturday at Hallford Stadium.
The Chargers got rushing touchdowns from Channing Henderson (60 yards) and Wesley Brown (3 yards) to take control early at 16-0. A 12-yard scoring toss from Arrington Watkins to Jordan Toney put Champion (1-0) up 24-0 on the Lions (0-1).
Randy Smith contributed a pick six to top off the day for Champion for the final of 32-0.
Miller Grove 40, Tucker 0
Two Miller Grove Wolverines accounted for five touchdowns to lead Miller Grove (1-0) to a 40-0 decision over the Trail to the Title runners-up Tucker Tigers (0-1) on Saturday at Adams Stadium.
Ta’Jon Corbitt scored three touchdowns and Ali Dorgan added two more in the win. Andrea Johnson aided the shutout with 11 tackles including 5 sacks on the defensive side of the ball.
Lithonia 24, Sequoyah 6
Quarterback Bryce Blackburn accounted for three touchdowns in leading the Lithonia Bulldogs (1-0) to a 24-6 win over Sequoyah (0-1) at North DeKalb Stadium on Saturday.
Blackburn finished the day 3 of 4 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns while adding 22 yards and a touchdown on two carries in the game for Lithonia.
Defensive end/tight end A.J. Abdullah finished with 5 tackles (2 for a loss), 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery on defense and caught a touchdown pass for 38 yards and was awarded the game ball for his performance.
Amonte Harden added a 2 for 3 day passing for 32 yards and a touchdown while rushing four times for 34 yards. Running back Shamarion Jones had five carries for 84 yards in the game.
Defensive tackle Wesley Covert had four total tackles in the game, all for losses including 1.5 sacks.
Chapel Hill 8, Salem 6
A late touchdown and two-point conversion propelled the Chapel Hill Panthers (1-0) to an 8-6 win over the Salem Lions (0-1) on Saturday at Hallford Stadium.
Trailing 6-0 from middle of the first quarter, the Panthers rode the back of Isaiah Scott to get in scoring position. JaQuavious Wallace knotted the game at 6-6 with his one-yard plunge into the end zone. Dwayne Hayes scored the two-point conversion to give Chapel Hill the winning margin.
Freedom 8, Stone Mountain 6
The Freedom Rams (1-0) held off the Stone Mountain Pirates (0-1) for an 8-6 victory at Avondale Stadium on Saturday morning.
Jayshawn Appling made it a thriller with a 25-yard touchdown run for the Pirates. Several Pirates including Exauce Omenga, Jabari Milton and Appling gave standout performances for the Pirates.
Cedar Grove 14, Stephenson 6
A stout Cedar Grove Saints (1-0) defense helped control the game as the Saints pulled out a 14-6 win over the Stephenson Jaguars (0-1) in the second of three games at Hallford Stadium on Saturday.
Several big defensive stops kept the Saints out in front for the win.
