Southwest DeKalb headed the list of local teams with unblemished 3-0 records in action from last week.
Coach Tyrus Taylor’s Southwest DeKalb squad took firm control of the Region 5-AAAAA championship race by sweeping Chamblee in a pair of contests last week.
The Panthers prevailed over Chamblee (8-5) March 20 and Chamblee again (9-8) March 22 while also blanking Miller Grove (24-0) March 18 in moving to 6-0 in the league and 9-2 overall on the year.
Junior Dante Alexander hurled a no-hitter for Southwest DeKalb in a 24-0 defeat of Miller Grove March 18, striking out four over three innings. Senior Juston Jordan (3-4; 5 RBI; 3 RS; 2 2B), junior Keun Neal (3-3; 6 RBI; 3 RS; 3 SB), senior Theo Bryant (2-2; 4 RS) and freshman Sadir Ryan (2-4; 4 RS; 2 RBI) collected multiple hits offensively.
McNair’s push for a region title gained more momentum following a perfect 3-0 record last week. Coach Marcus Salter’s Mustangs knocked off Douglass (12-9) March 19 and Therrell (17-2) March 21 to move to 6-1 in Region 6-AA action and also romped past Cross Keys (21-6) March 20 in improving to 7-8 overall on the year.
Redan likewise enjoyed a strong 3-0 week on the Region 5-AAA front, as coach Alexander Wyche’s Raiders out-scored Cedar Grove (19-1) March 18, Cedar Grove (17-0) March 20 and Stone Mountain (14-0) March 22 by the combined margin of 50-1 in moving to 5-0 in the league and 13-3 overall.
Neal (3-4; 2 RBI), Alexander (3-4; 1 RS; 1 RBI) and Ryan (3-4; 2 RBI) erupted for three hits each as the Panthers eased past Chamblee (8-5) March 20. Bryant earned the pitching triumph in that outing, striking out four over five innings. Jordan (2-5; 1 HR), senior Eason Bing (2-3; 1 RS) and Bryant (2-4; 2 RS) delivered the biggest hits in Southwest DeKalb’s thrilling 9-8 defeat of Chamblee March 22.
Senior Yereny Batista (3-3; 5 RBI; 3 RS; 2 2B) and senior Kameron Guidry (2-2; 3 RS) came up big offensively in Redan’s 19-1 decision over Cedar Grove March 18.
Juniors Theodore Riddick (3-4; 1 RS) and Jontavius McDaniel (2-4; 1 RS) carried Lithonia in a 6-3 triumph over Arabia Mountain March 19.
Senior Keino Robinson (3-4; 3 RS; 2 RBI; 2 2B) and freshman Noah Grayson (2-3; 2 RS) shined at the plate in Tucker’s 12-3 victory over Charles Drew March 19. Freshman Michael Robinson (4 1/3 IP; 5 SO; 1 ER) secured the Tiger mound triumph.
