Martin Luther King Jr. remained undefeated on the year in leading the way among DeKalb County baseball teams in action from last week.
Coach Greg Boatwright’s Lions erupted for 35 runs over two games in besting Riverdale (25-6) Feb. 25 and Clarkston (10-2) Feb. 27 to go 2-0 on the week and improve to 4-0 overall for the year.
Martin Luther King Jr. combined 14 hits and 15 walks into an offensive explosion during a 25-6 decision over Riverdale Feb. 25. Junior Lamont Barner went 3-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the way individually. Junior Jahe Worrell (2-3; 3 RS; 3 RBI) and junior Antoine Lloyd (2-3; 4 RS; 2 RBI) added multiple hit hits.
Martin Luther King Jr. also belted Clarkston by a 10-2 margin Feb. 27, as Barner (3-4; 2 RS; 2 RBI; 3 SB), junior Jeremy Cain (2-4; 1 RS; 2 SB), Worrell (2-4; 1 SB) and senior Varick Lawrence (2-2; 3 RS; 2 RBI; 2 2B) put up big offensive numbers.
Coach Timothy Jones guided his Jaguars past Columbia by a 16-1 margin Feb. 25. Coach Marcus Salter’s McNair Mustangs registered their first triumph of the year, rolling past Therrell in a Region 6-AA opener Feb. 26 by the score of 11-6 to move to 1-2 overall.
Coach Tyrus Taylor’s Southwest DeKalb Panthers pulled off a tough 8-6 decision over Creekside Feb. 25 to even their overall mark for the year at 1-1. Coach Matt Masce’s Tucker Tigers took care of Columbia by a 9-1 tally Feb. 27 to move to 1-2 overall on the year.
Arabia Mountain pounded out 25 hits while soaring to a 17-11 victory over Charles Drew Feb. 25. Junior Noah Evans (3-5; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 1 3B) and sophomore Mitchell Hall (3-4; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 1 2B) led the way at the plate individually for the Rams, while junior Desmore Joseph (2-5; 2 RS; 2 RBI), senior Terence Phillips (2-3; 2 RBI; 1 RS) and senior Micah Sanders (2-5; 2 RS) also collected multiple hits. Senior Zion Lockhart picked up the win on the mound following three and two thirds innings of relief that included six strikeouts and five earned runs.
Cedar Grove rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to knock off Morrow in a 10-8 thriller. Sophomore Jemel Johnson (3-5; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 1 SB) shined brightest on the offensive side ahead of junior Rickey Dawson (2-3; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 3 SB). Junior D’Corrie Kimble earned the pitching decision while striking out one and allowing one walk and one hit over one inning.
Junior Davis Jenkins went 2-3 with two RBI and one double to help lift Chamblee in a tough 3-2 loss to GAC Feb. 25. Senior Matthew Welsh finished 2-4 in a 13-5 defeat against Dunwoody Feb. 27.
Clarkston received strong pitching from sophomore Brian Morris in a 10-5 triumph over Stone Mountain Feb. 25, as the Angoras rallied in the final innings to pull out the key victory. Senior Justice Smith 1-2; 3 RS; 2 RBI; 2 SB) and senior Napoleon Waters (1-2; 1 RS; 2 RBI; 2 SB) took center stage offensively for Clarkston. Morris also went the full four innings on the pitching mound, striking out five and allowing two hits and one earned run to garner the triumph there.
Junior Alomgir Hussain (1-2; 1 RS; 1 SB), sophomore Syful Hogue (1-3; 2 RBI), sophomore Jose Parra (1-2) and senior Christopher Penuela (1-2; 1 SB) delivered one hit each for Cross Keys in a 12-3 loss to Stone Mountain Feb. 27.
Lakeside pulled out a thrilling 6-5 decision over Decatur Feb. 26, as freshman Malachi Cloud went 2-4 with three RBI to lead the way individually at the plate. Senior Daniel Harrison notched the pitching triumph, striking out six while allowing no walks and four earned runs over five and two third innings.
Redan snared a 1-0 pitching duel triumph over South Gwinnett Feb. 27, as senior Kevin Kilpatrick went the full seven innings on the mound and struck out nine and allowed three hits. Senior Christian Webb provided the only offense for the Raiders, going 2-3 with a double. Redan also blanked Arabia Mountain (17-0) March 2, with junior Donye Evans (3 IP; 6 SO; 1 HA; WP) and senior Yereny Batista (1 IP; 2 SO) shining on the mound.
