The recent rains have played havoc with the DeKalb baseball schedules, but several DeKalb teams got games in with some excellent performances to get their seasons off to a great start.
Coach Donnie Hayes and the Lakeside Vikings remained undefeated at 3-0, sweeping a pair of games at Chamblee from the host Bulldogs (12-4) and Druid Hills (5-0) Feb. 18.
Lakeside erupted for 12 hits in a 12-4 decision over Chamblee Feb. 18, as junior Levi Cloud (3-4; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 2 2B) and junior Deatric Alexander (3-4; 2 RBI; 1 2B; 2 SB) delivered three hits each to lead the way. Sophomore Zaylan Washington also went 2-4 with one run scored in the victory. Alexander struck out one while earning the pitching triumph with one inning of relief.
Cloud also stroked a key triple to drive in two runs in Lakeside’s 5-0 blanking of Druid Hills Feb. 18. Sophomore Joseph Garcia turned in a stellar effort on the mound for the Vikings, striking out five and walking one while allowing only six hits over six and one third innings to pick up the victory.
Coach Greg Boatwright’s Martin Luther King Jr. Lions opened the season with an impressive doubleheader sweep of Columbia Feb. 23, rolling to a 2-0 start with victories by the respective counts of 15-0 and 13-2. Junior Caleb Chisholm went 2-4 with three RBI, a double and stolen base to pace a six-hit attack for Martin Luther King Jr. in a 15-0 triumph over Columbia Feb. 23. Junior Lamont Barner registered 11 strikeouts and walked two over five innings in going all the way and posting a no-hitter on the pitching end for the Lions.
Martin Luther King Jr. completed the twinbill sweep with a 12-2 victory in the nightcap, as junior Jeremy Cain struck out eight and allowed two hits and two earned runs over five innings on the mound. Chisholm crushed the key offensive blow again with a double that drove in three runs.
Coach Eric Hoxie’s Arabia Mountain Rams took care of Mt. Zion by a 10-3 romp Feb. 18 to get the 2019 season started at 1-0. Arabia Mountain opened the 2019 season with a strong 10-3 decision over Mt. Zion Feb. 18. Juniors Noah Evans (3-4; 2 RS; 3 SB) and Desmore Joseph (3-4; 2 RS) and junior Eric Matthews (3-5; 3 RS) collected three hits each to pace a balanced 16-hit Ram offensive attack.
Seniors Judah Hill (2-4; 2 RS) and Tyson Scott (2-5; 1 RBI; 1 2B) also delivered two hits each. Senior Zion Lockhart earned the pitching triumph, striking out five and allowing two walks and one hit over four innings. Senior Micah Sanders registered the mound save while striking out seven and allowing three hits and three walks over three innings.
Coach Lavato Byrd’s Cedar Grove Saints evened their record at 1-1 with an 18-0 decision over McNair Feb. 23. Cedar Grove pounded out nine hits and stole 33 bases in rolling past McNair (18-0) Feb. 23. Sophomore Demond Dollison (3-3; 2 RS; 2 RBI; 6 SB); junior Rickey Dawson (2-2; 3 RS; 5 SB) and freshman Jared Holiday (2-2; 3 RBI; 2 2B; 2 SB) led the way offensively.
Dawson (2 IP; 5 SO; 3 BB; WP) and Dollison (1 IP; 3 SO; 1 BB) teamed up to strike out eight and toss a no-hitter on the pitching end for the Saints.
Coach Timothy Jones and the Stephenson Jaguars rounded out the list of undefeated teams from last week, going 1-0 while besting Mays by a 14-5 margin Feb. 18 to improve to 3-0 overall on the year.
Junior Brandon Lamback (2-4; 1 RS; 1 SB) and senior Kevin Kilpatrick (2-4; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 1 3B; 1 SB) collected two hits each to lead Redan to an 8-2 road triumph over Brunswick Feb. 22. Senior Emmanuel Martinez garnered the pitching victory, starting and allowing three hits and two earned runs to go with five strikeouts and three walks over four innings.
The Raiders also came back the next day to defeat Glynn Academy by a 6-3 margin Feb. 23, as junior Donye Evans struck out nine and walked three while allowing four hits and no earned runs over five and two third innings.
Sophomore Isaac Harkins (2-4; 2 RBI; 1 2B) shined at the plate for Chamblee in a 12-4 loss to Lakeside Feb. 18. Senior Matthew Welsh went 2-3 with a double to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-4 victory over Druid Hills Feb. 18. Senior Max Stephens (3 IP; 0 ER; 4 HA; 4 BB; WP) and junior Michael Sarzen (2 IP; 2 SO; 1 BB) combined to handle the pitching duties in the triumph. Welsh collected three hits in four at-bats and added one RBI and one double in Chamblee’s tough 4-3 loss to traditional power Lassiter Feb. 23.
Sophomore Isidro Santillano (1-2) and junior Alomgir Hussain (1-2) collected one hit each for Cross Keys in a 16-1 loss to Therrell Feb. 23.
