The Bethune Lions and Tucker Tigers finished their 2017 seasons in the Trail to the Title championship game and opened the 2018 season with victories last Saturday.
The runners-up Lions (1-0) rolled to a 22-0 win over the Champion Chargers (0-1) behind the play of quarterback Isaiah Logan. Logan three for 95 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 25 yards for another score in the game.
Bernard Mack rushed for 70 yards and caught one touchdown pass from Logan for 80 yards while Armond Davis caught a 15-yard TD toss from Logan.
Phillip Blalock had five tackles to lead the defensive shutout while Ventrillo Dunlap (forced fumble, fumble recovery), Josh Peterson (forced fumble) and Jaiden Fiagro all had four stops in the game.
Champion got hard fought defensive play from Jacob Moore, Kyle Mosley, Christian Williams and Cameron Ferguson.
Tucker 38, Renfroe 26
The Tucker Tigers (1-0) ran their regular season win streak to 31 games behind an outstanding game from Jayqunn Billingsley in a 38-26 win over the Renfroe Bulldogs (0-1).
Billingsley rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns in the game, including a thrilling 99-yard run for a score with Tucker backed up on its own one-yard line.
Caleb Collins made big plays on defense and special teams as he returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown and added an 80-yard kickoff return for a second score.
Chapel Hill 33, Salem 6
The Chapel Hill Panthers roared into the 2018 season after missing the 2017 playoffs with an impressive 33-6 win over the Salem Lions.
Billy Johnson made himself felt on both sides of the football for the Panthers (1-0) with 49 yards rushing and two touchdowns and contributing a big turnover with an interception on defense. Ethan Patterson had two receptions for 29 yards (11-yard TD) on offense and added a pair of quarterback sacks on defense.
Sabian Campbell was 3-3 passing for 55 yards and a touchdown and added a score of his on with his feet. Elon Patterson added 51 yards rushing and Keion Beard added a 26-yard reception.
McNair 22, Redan 0
The McNair Colts equaled their win total from 2017 with a 22-0 shutout win over the Redan Raiders.
Kadarius Bailey was a key factor for the Colts (1-0) with a rushing touchdown on offense and an interception return for a touchdown. Malachi Jackson had three receptions, including a touchdown, from Aveon Jackson (4-6 passing, 1 TD).
Redan was led by Jayden Warren on defense with 11 tackles with Adrian Walker contributing seven stops and Anthony Randolph three tackles including a sack. Xavian Green had 12 carries for 116 yards to lead the Raiders offense.
Lithonia 34, Sequoyah 0
The Lithonia Bulldogs opened the season with a 34-0 shutout of the Sequoyah Chiefs last weekend.
Chase Lawrence and Renardo Eubanks had touchdown runs of 35 yards and 40 yards, respectively, to lead Lithonia’s charge to 1-0.
Columbia 26, Peachtree 14
The Columbia Eagles opened 1-0 for the second consecutive season with a 26-14 win over the Peachtree Patriots.
Roland Edwin ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles while teammate Wince Carey added a 30-yard touchdown scamper.
Henderson 22, Druid Hills 6
The Henderson Cougars picked up a 22-6 season opening win over the Druid Hills Dragons on Saturday.
Druid Hills picked up 47 yards rushing and a touchdown from fullback Caleb Kenard in the losing effort.
In other games, Stephenson defeated Cedar Grove 8-0 and Freedom won a 24-12 decision over Stone Mountain.
