On a night when DeKalb County was climbing towards the mid-teens state tournament berths, Redan’s electrifying 35-32 win over Westminster in Region 5-3A boys’ play is one for ESPN Sports Center highlights.

Westminster tied the game at 32-32 with 1.3 seconds left on the clock and Redan facing the length of the court at a chance to win.

The Raiders (13-11) threw the ball into exciting freshman Javen Flowers-Smith about the foul line where he turned and heaved a high arching, one-handed shot towards the basket. The ball hit nothing but net sending the Raiders to a 35-32 victory and into the state playoffs. It is the first state playoff berth for Redan since 2010.

In other Region 5-3A games, No. 5 ranked Cedar Grove (19-6) knocked off McNair (4-18) 69-46 and Towers defeated Lovett 72-58 as both earned state playoff berths. It is the first since 2012 for Towers and sixth consecutive for the Saints.

Stone Mountain’s boys’ season came to an end in a 73-38 loss to Pace Academy.

The Region 5-5A Tournament at Southwest DeKalb put two more teams into the state playoffs as the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (14-10) defeated Lithonia (3-19) in girls’ play and host Southwest DeKalb (16-1) won the boys’ contest 53-41.

Kishuana Patterson added to her 1,000 career points total with a game high 17 points and her teammates held Lithonia (3-19) to just 7 second half points to pull away to a 46-28 win. Miller Grove returns to the state playoffs after missing a year ago.

Shania Montoya added 12 points for Miller Grove while N’Laya Perkins had seven points and six rebounds to lead Lithonia.

Southwest DeKalb (16-10) used a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter to finally pull away in its 53-41 victory over the Arabia Mountain Rams (12-13).

N’Kyzie Hawkins had pulled the rams within 40-37 with a pair of free throws with 4:32 to play, but the Panthers responded with its 10-2 run spurred by Devonta Brittain’s back-to-back layups and a 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line by KD Johnson pushed the lead out to 50-27.

Johnson added another free throw to go with two by James Glissen III in the final 21 seconds to close out the game.

Glissen finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Johnson with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Eugene brown with 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Panthers. Hawkins scored 18 to lead Arabia Mountain while Jordan Sterling added 14.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Lady Lions pulled off the biggest surprise of the night with a 37-36 upset of the No. 4 ranked Forest Park Panthers. The Lions (7-19) earned their third state tournament berth in program history and the first since 2010.
