Justin Nelson had a pair of rushing touchdowns and an interception to lead the Arabia Mountain Rams to a Region 5-5A title clinching 27-14 victory over the Southwest DeKalb Panthers on Friday night at Godfrey Stadium.
Nelson’s first touchdown came near the end of the first half on a one-yard plunge into the end zone to put the Rams (7-2, 4-0) ahead for good at 10-7 going into the break.
Southwest DeKalb was holding tough allowing just a 30-yard field goal by Malcolm Grinnell, who had hit a field goal in the first quarter for a 3-0 Rams’ lead, to stay within one score at 13-7 going into the fourth quarter.
Arabia Mountain begin to pull away in the fourth quarter as quarterback Bryson Williams connected with receiver Matthew Crawford for a touchdown and a 20-7 lead.
Nelson then picked off a Southwest DeKalb pass that led to his second rushing touchdown of the night to make it 27-7.
Southwest DeKalb (6-3, 3-1) scored late to make the final margin 27-14. The Panthers had scored to take a 7-3 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Seoul Newtown to Aquil Muhammed.
The Rams end the regular season with a game against Lithonia (3-6, 2-2) which upended Miller Grove (4-5, 1-3) 14-0 behind a 23-carry, 163 yards and two touchdown performance from Rayshad Baldwin.
Southwest DeKalb takes on Columbia (5-4, 2-2), a 62-0 winner over Chamblee last Friday on the Eagles’ senior night at Adams Stadium, in a battle for the Region 5-5A No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs.
Tucker 62, Mt. Zion 0
The Class 6A No. 1 ranked Tucker Tigers rolled to a 62-0 Region 4-6A victory over Mt. Zion-Jonesboro behind three touchdown passes by quarterback Travon Ford on Friday at Adams Stadium.
Ford connected for touchowns with Isaiah Dunson, Joshua Vann anad Gerry Vaughn as the Tigers (8-1, 6-0) jumped out quickly on Mt. Zion (1-8, 1-5).
David Davis’s first touchdown of the night and Vann’s touchdown catch had the Tigers up 14-0 with 5:43 left in the first quarter. Davis would add a second rushing touchdown in the game to go with one from Darick Stephenson.
The Tiger defense held Mt. Zion to just 21 yards of offense and special teams picked up a touchdown as a blocked field goal turned into a 70-yard touchdown return by Garen McKinney.
In other Region 4-6A action, the Stephenson Jaguars (7-2, 6-0) kept pace with Tucker atop the standings with a 26-0 victory over the Martin Luther King Jr. Lions (3-6, 2-4) at Hallford Stadium on Friday night. The win set up a Region 4-6A title game between the No. 8 ranked Jaguars and the No. 1 Tigers at 8:00 pm on Friday at Hallford Stadium.
In other Class 6A action, Dunwoody (2-7, 0-7) dropped a 41-0 decision to Region 7-6A leader Alpharetta (8-1, 7-0).
Cedar Grove 47, McNair 0
The Class 3A No. 1 ranked and defending Class 3A state champions Cedar Grove Saints (9-0, 6-0) upped their win streak to 19 games in a row with a 47-0 victory over DeKalb and Region 5-3A foe McNair (3-6, 1-5) to clinch the 2017 region title.
Jadon Haselwood had a touchdown catch and returned an interception for a score to lead the Saints who jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.
Xavier Dennis added a second touchdown pass with his throw to Trevon Richardson while Darrell Neal and Deonte Maxwell each had a touchdown run in the game.
Rashad Preston also returned an interception for a score for the Saints.
In other Region 5-3A play over the weekend, Redan (3-6, 2-4) won their homecoming contest 20-6 over Stone Mountain (1-8, 0-6) and Towers (4-5, 3-3) dropped a 43-12 decision to Westminster (4-5, 4-2).
Lakeside 46, Berkmar 12
Senior running back Max Guggemos rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lakeside Vikings (2-7, 1-4) to a come-from-behind 46-12 road win over Berkmar (0-10, 0-6) on Friday.
Guggemos went over 1,000 yards rushing (190 carries, 1,138, 11 TDs) for the second consecutive season and needs just 64 yards in his final game for the Vikings to go over 3,000 for his career. He stands at 2,936 yards with 31 touchdowns on 450 career carries.
Damon Davis added a 36-yard touchdown run and Matthew Holt and Ryshad Pitts connected on a pair of touchdown passes.
In other DeKalb County action, Cross Keys (0-6) fell 47-19 to Pataula Charter (3-6) despite a pair of exciting fourth quarter flea flickers for scores, Druid Hills (1-8) fell 56-13 to Woodward Academy and in a Thursday night game Clarkston (1-8) fell 28-0 to Forest Park (2-8).
