The Druid Hills Lady Red Devils lost a tough 1-0 defensive battle to Howard in the opening round of the Class 4A girls’ state soccer playoffs at James R. Hallford Stadium on Tuesday.

Druid Hills (8-9-0) came in as the No. 2 seed from Region 4-4A and looked like it early on pressing the Howard defense for shots on goal.

In the first 15 minutes of the game, Druid Hills had four good looks at shots on goal, but came away empty as the Howard goalie turned away four goals. One of the shots took a diving stop to the right for the goalie to make the play and keep the game tied at 0-0.

Druid Hills’ goalie Cate Moore made a nice save off a corner kick with 23:02 to play before half as the score remained 0-0.

Howard had a long shot from out front hit the crossbar and bounce over the goal with 16:04 remaining in the half to keep the score at 0-0.

A nice pass from the left wing to an open player splitting the Druid Hills defense led to the only goal of the game with 14:16 to play in the first half. Moore made another save while being run into at the 12:10 mark to keep Druid Hills within striking distance.

The Lady Red Devils almost knotted the score with 10:20 left in the half, but the Howard goalie did not have to move on the shot to make the save.

The two teams played a scoreless second half with Druid Hills getting the only real shot on goal which was deflected by a defender out front to keep the score at 0-0 with 18:04 to play.

The Druid Hills Devils (12-6-0) open Class 4A boys’ playoff action hosting Spalding (6-8-3) tonight at 7:30 pm at Adams Stadium.

Redan wrapped up its season with an 11-4-0 record with a 10-0 first round road loss to Greater Atlanta Christian (12-5-2) on Tuesday.

The Stone Mountain Pirates (9-4-1) open boys’ play on the road at East Hall (14-4-0) tonight at 6:30 pm
