Senior running back Will Jernigan scored a pair of touchdowns including the game winner late in the fourth quarter to push the Lakeside Vikings to a 22-15 victory over the Miller Grove Wolverines at Adams Stadium on Friday night.
Miller Grove had knotted the game at 15-15 with 9:11 to play on the second of two Deondre Jackson touchdowns, a 33-yard run, when the Vikings went to work.
Lakeside (3-1) drove to the Miller Grove 9 where the Wolverine defense stiffened to force a third and nine. Jernigan caught a screen pass from Matthew Holt and bulled his way into the end zone for the go-ahead score with just over three minutes to play in the game. The extra point try was good for a 22-15 lead for the Vikings.
The Wolverines (2-3) could not get anything going and a late fumble ended their hopes as the Vikings recovered and ran out the final minute of the clock to preserve the win.
Miller Grove jumped ahead 7-0 in the first quarter on a seven-yard Jackson touchdown run. Lakeside answered in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Alec Josey and a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead into the half.
Jernigan’s first touchdown came in the third quarter as he got lose for a 26-yard touchdown run to push the Vikings lead to 15-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Cedar Grove 28, Lovett 21
The No. 3 ranked Cedar Grove Saints rallied in the fourth quarter for a 28-21 Region 5-AAA road victory over the No. 5 ranked Lovett Lions on Friday night.
Trailing 21-20, quarterback Jelani Woods connected with Dennis Bell on a 42-yard pass play to regain the lead at 26-21. Woods then got into the end zone to convert the two-point play to make it a 28-21 advantage.
Cedar Grove’s Justin Shaffer sacked talented Lovett quarterback Brady Tindall with less than a minute to play to end Lovett’s bid to rally late.
Tindall had given Lovett an early 7-0 lead on a three-yard run, but the Saints answered on a Woods’ one-yard sneak to knot the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Lovett took a 14-7 lead into the half via a blocked punt.
Woods scored his second of three touchdowns on the night in the third quarter as he scrambled eight yards for the score as the Saints tied the game at 14-14. Woods would give the Saints (3-1, 1-0) a 20-14 lead with another one-yard score early in the fourth quarter.
Lovett (2-2, 0-1) regained the lead at 21-20 following Tindall’s second touchdown of the evening.
Tucker 58, Jonesboro 0
Chris Broadwater scored three touchdowns to lead No. 10 Tucker (3-1, 1-0) to a 58-0 trouncing of Region 4-6A foe Jonesboro (0-5, 0-1) on Friday night at Tara Stadium.
Broadwater doubled his touchdown total for the season in the game with runs of 6, 34 and 36 yards for the Tigers. Taurean Taylor would add 107 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns in the romp.
Antonio Showers returned an interception 27 yards for another score and Josh Vann returned a punt 60 yards for the Tigers.
Three DeKalb County teams picked up their first wins of the season as Chamblee, Towers and Lithonia came out victorious over the weekend.
Chamblee (1-3) upended previously undefeated Salem (3-1) 6-0 to earn Coach Curtis Mattair his first win as the Bulldogs head coach.
The Towers Titans (1-3, 1-0) picked up their first win of the year by spoiling DeKalb rival McNair’s homecoming 24-7 in a Region 5-AAA battle. The Titans outscored the Mustangs (2-2, 0-1) 24-7 in the second half following a scoreless opening half.
Lithonia (1-3) rolled to a 21-0 shutout of Meadowcrreek (0-4) as the Bulldogs got into the win column for the first time this season.
