DeKalb County had three teams move one step closer to a state playoff berth with victories in Region 6-4A Tournament play on Monday.
The Arabia Mountain Rams (10-15) advanced to second round play tonight against No. 2 ranked Lithonia (20-4) at Lithonia tonight (7:00 pm) with a 59-41 win over Chamblee at Marist on Monday.
Arabia was leading 37-33 with 3:30 to play in the third quarter when a foul call resulted in a technical on Chamblee. The Rams would hit four of three of the foul shots (two by Jordan Sterling) to fuel a 10-1 run to end the quarter. Walter Cunningham hit a pair of free throws and had a drive to the basket in the run and Jamaal Middleton’s layup would send the Rams to a 47-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rams missed seven free throws and had one basket, a layup by Eric Ross, in the first 4:20 of the final period, but the Bulldogs could not take advantage as they committed 7 turnovers in the period and managed just one free throw during that span to trail 49-35.
Jermon Clark’s offensive rebound and put back with 3:40 remaining made it 51-35 as the Rams would finish the game with a bucket by Ross and six consecutive free throws four by Darius Giles and two by Middleton.
Odell Ferrell would score a pair of baskets for Chamblee, but they would get no closer than 18. Ferrell finished with a game-high 18 points to lead Chamblee and Dazz Riggins added 7 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs who finish the season 7-19.
Walter Cunningham had 15 points to lead the Rams as Eric Ross added 12 and Darius Giles 10.

The nightcap at Marist featured the host War Eagles against the Cross Keys Indians in a game won 59-25 by Marist.
Marist’s Patrick Zeck was the catalyst for the War Eagles (9-17) as he hit for a game-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the paint.
Zeck scored the final six points of the first quarter including a baseline drive for a dunk and old fashioned three-point play to help Marist increase a three-point lead (5-2) to 11-6 heading into the second quarter.
He then score the first seven points of the second quarter, including a three-point play to open the period as the lead ballooned 24-6 before Cross Key’s Sol Quintanilla’s pull up cut the lead to 24-8 at the half.
Juan Ferraras would finish with 11 points to lead Cross Keys (0-22) and Jerimiah Cross added 9 points and 8 rebounds for the Indians.
6-4A Girls at Chamblee
A pair of DeKalb teams picked up Region 6-4A girls’ wins at Chamblee on Monday.
The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs (10-12) defeated Cross Keys (1-21) 53-30 to advance to tonight’s 7:00 pm game against Redan (18-4) at Redan for a shot at the state playoffs.
Lithonia pulled a bit of an upset as the Lady Bulldogs (2-17) upended the Grady Lady Gray Knights (5-21) 41-36 to advance to face top seeded Marist (23-2) at Marist tonight at 7:00 pm.
Region 4-3A Girls
Cedar Grove, McNair and Towers all had their seasons come to an end in first round play of the Region 4-3A Tournament at Maynard Jackson on Monday.
Cedar Grove (6-14) fell 36-30 to Washington (10-13), Towers (3-17) dropped a 37-27 decision to Blessed Trinity (8-13) and McNair (1-21) fell to Douglass (11-12).
Region 2-6A first round play gets underway on Tuesday at Newton with winners earning a state tournament berth and advancing to the semifinals.
Girls’ play is at 4:00 pm (Rockdale Co. vs. Alcovy) and 7:00 pm (Lovejoy vs. Lakeside). The boys’ play at 5:30 pm (Lakeside vs. Lovejoy) and 8:30 pm (Rockdale Co. vs. Alcovy).
The Region 2-6A semifinals are set for Friday with the No. 5 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers (21-4) awaiting the Rockdale-Alcovy winner at 7:00 pm and Newton (20-5) hosting the Lovejoy-Lakeside winner at 4:00 pm.
The boys’ semifinals features No. 7 Newton hosting the Rockdale-Alcovy winner at 5:30 pm and Tucker (19-5) waiting to face the Lakeside-Lovejoy winner at 8:30 pm.
The Region 6-5A quarterfinals has four games tonight at Banneker featuring Miller Grove (14-10) vs. Tri-Cities (11-10) in girls’ action at 4:00 pm and a pair of boys’ games as Dunwoody (8-18) takes on No. 10 ranked SW DeKalb (21-4) at 5:30 pm and Stephenson (12-11) facing off with Tri-Cities (9-12).
All four games tonight puts the winners into the state tournament.
In other Region 6-4A girls games tonight Columbia (13-7) faces Arabia Mountain (17-8) at Marist at 5:30 pm and St. Pius (15-9) takes on Stone Mountain (12-11) at 5:30 at Redan.
The Region 6-4 boys’ 5:30 pm games involving DeKalb teams today include Redan (16-8) against Columbia (11-11) at Lithonia and No. 4 St. Pius (21-4) against Stone Mountain (12-13) at Grady.
Region 4-3A boys’ games today at Maynard Jackson involving DeKalb teams includes McNair (4-18) vs. Blessed Trinity (12-13) at 4:00 pm, Towers (5-19) vs. Decatur (10-14) at 7:00 pm and Cedar Grove (14-7) vs. Washington (3-22) at 8:30 pm.
