A rematch of the 2014 Chick-fil-A Invitational championship is set as No. 1 ranked Miller Grove and Tucker won their semifinal games on Tuesday night at Tucker.
The pair will meet at 8:30 pm at Tucker on Wednesday in a rematch of last season’s game won by Miller Grove.
The Wolverines (11-2) jumped out to an early lead and held Lithonia below 30 points in both halves on the way to a 60-47 victory.
Miller Grove controlled the first half pulling away from a 12-8 first quarter lead to a 31-21 advantage at the half.
Alterique Gilbert hit for 13 points in the first half as the No. 1 ranked Class 5A Wolverines extended the lead to 10.
Lithonia’s Jacara Cross put in 14 first half points for the No. 3 Class 4A ranked Bulldogs (9-4) to keep them within striking distance heading into the half.
The second half was almost even as Miller Grove outscored Lithonia 29-26 to keep the Bulldogs at a distance on the way to the win.
Lithonia plays in the Third Place final at 7:00 pm against North Clayton (7-4), a 70-61 loser in double overtime to the hosts Tucker Tigers.
First Semifinal
Tucker 70, North Clayton 61 — 2 OT
The Tucker Tigers advanced to their third consecutive Chick-fil-A Invitational championship game with a thrilling double overtime 70-61 victory over North Clayton on Tuesday night at Tucker.
Kenton Eskridge was the big story on the night with his clutch play on the way to a game-high 28 points for the Tigers.
The Tigers (10-3) had led most of the game, but trailed 51-48 with 25 seconds to play in the game. Eskridge stepped up with 10 seconds to play to hit a three from the corner to send the game into the first overtime tied at 51-51.
Overtime ended with the teams tied at 58-58 as North Clayton’s long heave with less than a second to play bounced off the backboard to send the teams into a second overtime.
Eskridge and the Tigers pulled away in the second overtime to end with the 70-61 victory and advance to the championship.
Tucker pulled away to a 33-22 halftime lead behind Eskridge who scored his first 12 points of the game in the second quarter.
Tucker was holding a 42-37 lead with 7:15 to play, but North Clayton (7-4) rallied behind the play of Ahsan Asadullah (20 points, 16 rebounds) to go on a 12-4 run to take a 49-46 lead with 1:35 to play in the fourth quarter.
Fifth Place Semifinals
Osceola, FL held off a furious fourth quarter rally by the Columbia Eagles to pick up a 63-58 win to advance to the Fifth Place Finals on Wednesday at Tucker.
Osceola (10-1) held a 34-24 advantage at the half before the Eagles began to rally in the second half behind the play of Jalen Cobb. Cobb and the Eagles pulled within two points with 1:02 to play, but could get no closer.
Cobb would finish with 22 points for the Eagles (6-6).
Mississippi Class 6A No. 1 ranked Meridian (15-2) defeated Cedar Grove (6-6) 65-38 in the other Fifth Place semifinal. Meridian advances to take on Osceola at 5:30 pm for the fifth place trophy.
Sixth Place Semifinals
South Miami, FL and Brainerd, TN picked up semifinal victories Tuesday to move into the Sixth Place Finals on Wednesday at Tucker.
South Miami (13-3) defeated Rockdale County (7-8) 56-48 to advance while Brainerd (10-3) pulled out a 56-51 win over Mays to move forward.
