The Clarkston Angoras held off a late Dunwoody Wildcats’ rally to pick up a 40-32 Region 6-5A boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday night at Clarkston.
Leading 18-10 at the half, the Angoras (2-4) used a pair of three-pointers by Maawiya Musa that sandwiched a jumper from the foul line by Mosungedi Etongwe early in the third quarter to roll out to a 26-10 advantage.
Dunwoody (2-5) began to chip away at the lead with a 12-4 run to end the third quarter including an offensive put back by Jared Whitehurst that cut the lead in half at 30-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
Whitehurst opened the fourth quarter with a jumper from out front to pull the Wildcats within 30-24.
Etongwe hit another jumper from the free-throw line and AJ McNeil hit a pull up three-pointer to give Clarkston an 11-point cushion at 35-24.
A three-pointer by Jeremy Rogers and a free throw from Nate Welsh cut the lead to 35-30 with three minutes to play in the game.
McNeil and Musa teamed up to hit two free throws each in the waning seconds to secure the 40-32 victory.
The two teams had played a tight first quarter with Dunwoody rallying from a 6-0 deficit spurred by a Benston three and he gave the Wildcats a brief 8-6 advantage moments later.
D’Allen Pritchett got an offensive board and put back to tie the game and McNeil got a steal and dunk just before the end of the quarter to give Clarkston a 10-8 lead heading into the second period.
Dante McIntyre’s offensive put back, a basket by McNeil and a pair of baskets from Etongwe accounted for an 8-0 run by the Angoras on the way to the 18-10 halftime lead.
McNeil would finish with a game-high 13 points for the Angoras with Musa adding 12 and Etongwe 10. Benston and Whitehurst had 7 points each to lead the Wildcats.

Dunwoody opened the night with a 56-18 Region 6-5A girls’ win over the Clarkston Lady Angoras.
Jazmine Bryant hit for six first quarter points and Anjanice Cutno added five as the Lady Wildcats (3-3) jumped to an early 13-4 lead.
Clarkston managed just one second quarter point while Bryant moved into double figures with 10 first half points, four in the second quarter, as Dunwoody took a 22-5 lead at the break.
Kendall Smith opened the second half with four quick points for Dunwoody and Cutno would turn three steals into seven points and would finish with nine in the quarter as the lead expanded to 46-11.
Amari McCrary scored six points, including a three-pointer, in the third quarter for the Lady Angoras (1-4).
Freshman Dorisa Smart put in five points in the fourth quarter for Clarkston while Dunwoody substituted and the scoring was spread out between five players.
Cutno finished the night with a game-high 14 points and Bryant added 13 for the Lady Wildcats. McCrary hit for team leading 9 points for Clarkston.
