The Tucker Tiger basketball program is recognizing one of its leaders from the 2007 Class AAAA state championship as they retire Marshon Brooks’ No. 11 jersey in a ceremony in the Tucker High auditorium tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 23) at 10 am.
Brooks was a senior and averaged a DeKalb County fifth best 18.9 points/game in the 2007 season when the Tigers finished 31-2 and upended fellow DeKalb foe and the 2006 defending state champion Columbia Eagles 56-51 in the title game at the Gwinnett Arena.
He went on to star for the Providence Friars where he finished his senior season as a First Team All-Big East selection at guard while averaging 24.6 points per game and collecting 225 rebounds and 80 assists. He was also named the Big East Player of the Week three times including the week he scored a Big East record of 52 points against Notre Dame (2/23/11) while hitting another Big East record 20 field goals in a game.
Brooks also scored 20 or more points 26 times in 2011 including his career high 52 and a 43 point, 10 rebound performance against #13 Georgetown.
That 2011 All-American and John Wooden Watch List season of 2011 got the notice of the NBA scouts and he was chosen 25th overall in the first round by the Boston Celtics and promptly traded to the New Jersey (Brooklyn) Nets where he played two years. His rookie season he averaged 12.6 points, 2.3 assists and 3.6 rebounds to earn Second Team All-NBA Rookie honors.
Trades to Boston, Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2013-14 season saw his playing time diminish and he signed with Italian League member Emporio Armani Milan in 2014. He averaged 12.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24 games in EuroLeague play.
He has now signed a lucrative three-year contract with the Jiangsu Dragons of the China Basketball League.
Brooks is also donating a scholarship fund to present $1,000 each to the most deserving academically and athletically boys’ basketball player and the Top Female Athlete at Tucker High. The athletes awarded the scholarships will be announced at the end of the school year.
A reception for the ceremony will follow at approximately 11 am.
