DeKalb County picked up three first round victories in the GHSA State Soccer Playoffs on Tuesday led by a sweep of a boys’/girls’ doubleheader at Hallford by Lakeside.
The No. 7 ranked Lakeside Lady Vikings improved to 16-0-1 on the season with their 14th shutout of the season, a 5-0 dominating performance against the Colquitt County Lady Packers (11-7-0) to open the doubleheader.
Lakeside came out putting the pressure on the Colquitt defense from the start keeping the ball in the Lady Packers half of the field and just missing a pair of shots on goal in the first four minutes of the game.
The pressure continued over the next seven minutes and the Colquitt County goalie, Sarah Matney, came up pick at the 27:48 mark of the first half as she turned away a pair of point blank shots by the Lakeside offense to keep the game scoreless.
A goal by Caroline Bowers with 23:02 remaining in the first half broke the ice for Lakeside as she picked up a deflection on a corner kick and put it in the corner of the net for a 1-0 Lakeside lead. It would be all Lakeside goalie Ashlee Graham would need as her teammates defense allowed only a pair of weak shots on goal the entire game.
Brittanie Evans padded the lead at the 16:33 mark of the first half as she took a pass that allowed her to beat the Colquitt defenders to the goal where she put it past a very heady Matney for a 2-0 Lakeside advantage.
Lakeside scored a pair of goals in just over a minute apart at the 4:33 and 3:14 marks of the first half to take a 4-0 lead at the half. Tyler Smith sprinted past the Colquitt defense to take on Matney one-on-one and put the ball into the right side of the net for the first goal. Sarah Garner picked up the deflection of her own shot off Matney to stick the second shot into the net for the second goal.
Matney kept Colquitt with 4-0 for most of the second half with her continued good play despite the constant pressure from the Lakeside offense until with 3:23 to play Evans split a pair of defenders and put the ball into the goal for the final score of 5-0.
Lakeside moves on to host No. 10 ranked Collins Hill (13-5-0) in a game set by the GHSA for Tuesday with a time and place to be announced. Collins Hill defeated Brookwood 1-0 to advance to the second round.
Class 6A Boys
Lakeside 3, Lee County 1
Max Wieder scored a pair of goals and Kellyen Walker scored an insurance goal to lead the Lakeside Vikings to a 3-1 victory over the Lee County Trojans in a Class 6A first round playoff game at Hallford Stadium.
Coming out of the half tied at 1-1 the Vikings (12-3-1) went at the Lee County (10-10-1) goalie with continued pressure which the goalie made a pair of tough saves to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
Jacques Perivier fed Wieder in front of the goal at the 24:37 mark of the second half and the junior turned and put it past the goalie into the right corner for the go-ahead goal at 2-1.
Just over three minutes later Lakeside’s Walker drove and drilled a shot into the left corner of the goal for a big insurance goal with 21:30 to play and 3-1 Viking lead.
Lee County’s goalie made a pair of big saves over the next three-minute span to keep his team within striking distance, but the Vikings began moving the ball and keeping the pressure as the clock ticked down to end the game.
The teams went to the half tied 1-1 in a drama filled first half that Lakeside had seemed to control the ball except for a pair of mishaps on defense.
Lee County got into goalie Kayvon Gharemani with 23:39 to play in the half and appeared to have a goal, but Viking defender Marshall Carl managed to knock the ball out just before it crossed into the net to save the goal.
The Vikings took the lead at the 17:42 mark as Sean McDaniel’s pass inside was deflected by the goalie right to Wieder for his first goal of the night and the 1-0 advantage.
Lee County scored following a foul on Lakeside as Matthew Pitts put the shot just under the cross bar to knot the game 1-1 going into the half.
