Miller Grove High School basketball coach Sharman White was named as one of five finalists for the Atlanta Tip-off Club’s 2015 Naismith High School Boys’ Coach of the Year Award.
“It is an honor to be chosen as a finalist for such a prestigious award,” said White. “I feel it is one of the top awards you can receive as a coach.”
The award started in 2008 as part of the Naismith Awards given each year by the Atlanta Tip-off Club honors and if chosen on March 12, White would be the first Georgia coach to receive the honor.
The other candidates include Huntington Prep’s Arkell Bruce (Huntington, WV), DeMatha Catholic’s Mike Jones (Hyattsville, MD), St. Vincent’s Dru Joyce (Akron, OH) and two-time winner Steve Smith of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA).
Miller Grove just finished a 27-4 season under White with an eighth consecutive Elite 8 state playoff appearance which ended a Georgia high school boys’ record six consecutive state titles for the program started by White in 2005.
White has put together a 237-57 record at Miller Grove and is coming off a 2014 season in which he was named the USA Today’s High School Boys’ Coach of the Year.
He also was named as an assistant coach to the USA U16 team that will compete in the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship to be held June 10-14 in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. White will head to training camp with Head Coach Don Showalter and fellow assistant Miles Simon on May 27-June 6 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado to determine the 12-member USA squad.
White’s accomplishments also include sending 17 players on to continue their education and basketball careers in college.
