The 2015 DeKalb County Junior Varsity Basketball Championships were decided on Saturday at Cedar Grove Middle School with the Columbia girls’ and Miller Grove boys’ claiming the championship trophies.
The Columbia Lady Eagles (11-2) limited the Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers (8-5) to 12 first half points on the way to a 49-37 victory for the girls’ title.
Southwest DeKalb scored the opening points of the game on a basket by Laniya Rogers, but Columbia’s KeShawn White (5) and Amanda Thompkins (4) combined for 9-0 run to give Columbia the lead for good.
Rogers hit a basket and Tierra Williams added two free throws to pull the Lady Panthers within 11-7 at the end of the quarter.
Columbia turned up the defense in the second quarter limiting Southwest to just five points and White scored six more points as the lead ballooned to 24-12 at the half.
Thompkins led the way in the third for Columbia with six more points to counteract five from Southwest’s Kiasha Newsome as the Lady Panthers were able to cut just one point off the Columbia lead to trail 36-25 with one quarter to play.
Destiny Anderson opened the third quarter with a three-pointer on the way to scoring seven points in the period. Thompkins and Illia Mathis closed out the scoring for Columbia with two free throws each to help seal the win.
Amanda Thompkins had a game-high 16 points to lead four Lady Eagles in double figures including Tierra Smith 11, and 10 each from KeShawn White and Destiny Anderson.
Kiasha Newsome finished with 13 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Lady Panthers.
Boys’ Championship
The Miller Grove Wolverines completed a 13-0 undefeated season by winning the DeKalb County Junior Varsity Boys’ Championship 42-34 over Lithonia (11-2).
The end of the first quarter had Miller Grove holding a slim 7-5 lead after back-to-back baskets by George Wilson to end the quarter.
Wilson continued his strong play scoring four of the first seven points of the second quarter to push the lead out to 14-5. Kendarius Harper’s three to end the half sent Miller Grove into the half leading 23-13.
AJ Bey had four points in the third quarter as Miller Grove held their lead at 10 (33-23) with a quarter to play.
Victor Nixon helped the Bulldogs close the gap with five points in the fourth quarter and DJ Gatson’s second basket of quarter pulled Lithonia within 36-32 with 2:18 to play.
Nixon got in for a basket with 1:40 to play and Saidarius Stinson hit a pair of free throws to close out the game.
George Wilson led Miller Grove with 12 points in the game, AJ Bey added 10 points and Kendarius Harper added 8 points and 11 rebounds.
Victor Nixon had a game-high 16 points to lead Lithonia.
