STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – On October 16, 2020, the DeKalb County School District received the audited financial reports for both FY2018 and FY2019 from the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts (DOAA). The reports rendered a clean unmodified opinion on the District’s financial activities. An exit conference was held with the DOAA State Auditors, DeKalb County Board of Education Chairman Marshall Orson, Vice Chair Vickie Turner, Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris and senior staff.

“We appreciate the work of the Department of Audits and the District’s Finance staff in getting the District back on track with regard to our annual audits,” Mr. Orson stated. “We also are pleased with the overall outcome of the audits but also understand that there are internal processes and practices that must be improved, and we commit to doing so as quickly as possible so that the public will feel assured about the financial management of the District.”

The release of these two audit reports will ensure timeliness of the completion of the FY2020 financial statements, the opportunity to correct and prevent future deficiencies, and prepare for the audit of FY2020 financial statements starting in November 2020.

“I am pleased that the audits were completed in a timely manner,” Superintendent Watson-Harris said. “We hope that this will result in a positive credit rating from Moody’s Investors Service.”

The District appreciates the dedication and efforts taken by staff and state auditors, who worked remotely during the pandemic to complete these two audits. The release of these reports also bolsters the District’s work to reinstate its credit rating.
