DeKalb Celebrates 2nd Annual Cyber Safety Day on Feb. 23
The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will host a second annual “Cyber Safety Day” on Friday, Feb. 23, as a unified stand for the safe use of social media and the internet.
On Feb. 23, more than 100,000 students and staff across DCSD will be encouraged to wear yellow clothing and engage in a wide variety of cyber safety activities. The effort is an expansion of regular efforts to inform students and the DeKalb schools community how to remain safe online.
“On February 23, our students and staff will once again lead the way in promoting a safe and positive online environment,” said DCSD Superintendent/CEO R. Stephen Green. “The internet has become a dangerous place. Without guiding our students in the right direction, we put them at risk to cyber-bullying, predators and worse. We hope the public will join us in the effort to protect our students.”
During the school day, classroom teachers will lead students through digital citizenship lessons. A representative from the DCSD communications team and district Twitter handle—@dekalbschools—will also be highlighting programs at various schools.
Cyber Safety Day ties into DCSD’s dial-up of districtwide safety and security. DCSD’s Instructional/Informational Technology division works diligently every day to provide web filters that curb harmful material and discourage negative behaviors.
Throughout the day, stakeholders are being asked to support the movement by posting photos of themselves engaged in cyber safety activities using the #CyberSafeDeKalb hashtag. We want all students, parents, teachers and staff to remember: it’s not just one day, one week, or one month worth of online safety—it’s behavior that lasts a lifetime.
