Week of February 28, 2017

Every day, the schools of DeKalb County School District are bursting with activities that supports college and career readiness. Twice a month, we’ll share that news in TRUST in the Schoolhouse. Below are some examples of that work.

Arabia Mountain High School
Congratulations to the school’s STAR student, Danielle Dean. She had the highest SAT score and is in the top 10 percent of the senior class. Dean noted that Dr. Fred Okoh, STAR teacher, has made a major impact on her life.

Clarkston High School
Congratulations to the Clarkston HS Robotics Team! All four of the team’s robots have qualified for the state competition this year. Clarkston HS has won four Vex Robotics tournaments this season, including the most recent tournament on Feb. 18. The team also earned the “Judges Award.”

Dunwoody Elementary School
Dunwoody Elementary celebrated Black History Month with a performance by the Kenyan African Safari Acrobats. The group used their acrobatic skills to teach students about the history and culture of several African countries. The students also enjoyed decorating their classroom doors to recognize the contributions of African Americans to the STEM industry.

Huntley Hills Elementary School
The Huntley Hills ES STEM program encourages girls to participate in various STEM fields through its SciGirls STEM Club. Each meeting, the girls learn about different STEM activities and how they relate to STEM careers. SciGirls have created lip gloss, bath bombs, glow in the dark Jell-O, chromatography flowers, borax crystal snowflakes, and modeling clay. Through these fun, hands-on learning experiences, the girls are realizing that they can enjoy a STEM career.

Toney Elementary School
The Toney ES Chorus performed at the Columbia High School cluster choral festival on Feb. 7. The chorus performed under the direction of Audrey Wilborn, music teacher.

Robert Shaw Theme Elementary School
Lockheed Martin partnered with Robert Shaw Theme ES during a visit for Engineers in the Classroom on Feb. 13. Trained volunteers visited the Fifth Grade classroom.
